What is nipple/areola tattooing?

Permanent tattoo after breast reconstruction to restore the natural looking color of an areola and/or nipple.  Medical quality inks and devices are used.  3Dimensional technique is created with multiple colors and shadowing to give the "illusion of protrusion".  This is a safe procedure using single-use needles.

Who is a good candidate for nipple tattooing?

Someone who is done with reconstruction and wants the look of nipple and areola color.  Tattooing can also help hide scars.  

What are the possible risks of nipple tattooing?

Potential risks include bleeding, infection scarring, fading over time.

Can I get a MRI with a tattoo?

Yes.  Be sure to mention you have a permanent tattoo at your appointment.

Is this covered with insurance?

Yes, The Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 requires insurance to cover post mastectomy reconstruction, including areola/nipple tattoing.  Insurance companies vary, please check with your provider. 

How long is nipple tattooing?

Nipple tattooing usually takes about 1-3 hours, depending if it is one side or both.

What is the recovery time for nipple tattooing?

This procedure is usually done in the office setting, with topical anesthetic if needed.  You should not shower that evening.  Aftercare instructions will be given to you.

When do I return for a follow up visit?

Follow up visit will be scheduled for 6 weeks.  Touch up can be done at that time, if needed.

How long before I can return to work?

You can go right back to work if desired.

How long before I can return to normal activity?

You can return to normal activities immediately.
