Liposuction FAQ

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

The best candidate for liposuction is someone who has realistic expectations and is in good overall health. Most liposuction patients are of average size, but are concerned with localized fat deposits. Dr. Sood can determine whether or not you will be a good candidate.

Does liposuction produce permanent results?

The results of liposuction are lasting given the person remains about the same weight. Fat cells removed during liposuction do not grow back; however surrounding fat cells can still grow if weight is gained. Therefore it is important to maintain a healthy weight following this procedure.

Will I be required to wear a compression garment following surgery?

Yes. The compression garment that you are placed in following surgery will need to be worn for about 4-6 weeks. This garment will help reduce swelling associated with surgery.

What risks are associated with liposuction?

Liposuction is very safe. Risks include infection, bleeding, hematoma, nerve injury, and skin ulcerations. The tumescent technique reduces these risks. Very rarely pulmonary embolism or pulmonary edema has occurred. Common side effects include swelling, numbness, and bruising. These tend to resolve within several weeks. Dr. Sood will further discuss these risks and side effects during your consultation.

When do I return for a follow up visit?

You will need to be seen the next day as well as a week after surgery. From there Dr. Sood will determine when you need to follow up.

How long before I can return to work?

Most patients are able to return to normal desk-type work within a few days. Some patients who have more strenuous work requirements may want to take off longer.

How long before I can return to normal activity?

Most activities of daily living can be resumed within a couple of days. It is important to get up and move around within a day of surgery to help decrease the chance of developing a blood clot. Strenuous activities should be avoided for about 4-6 weeks or until Dr. Sood has given you clearance.

How long before I see the final results?

Because postoperative swelling is associated with this procedure it is usually several weeks before you will be able to determine your “final” result. In the meantime, it is important to continue to wear your compression garment as well as maintaining a healthy diet.

I don’t want to have surgery. Are there other options for me to get the same result?

You can certainly choose to not have surgery. Weight loss can produce excellent results. This can be achieved through proper diet and exercise.
