What is removing expanders and replacing with implants?

This is the second surgery to remove the tissue expanders and replace with permanent implants.  Your skin has stretched adequately to now place a permanent implant.

Who is a good candidate for removing expanders and replacing implants?

Once optimal size has been reached and at least two months has passed, anyone needing to have their expanders removed and permanent implants placed.  

Where is the scar from removing expanders and replacing implants?

The scar will usually be in the same location as the mastectomy scar.

What are the possible risks of removing expanders and replacing with implants?

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, seroma, pain, scarring, numbness, asymmetry, hematoma, DVT, capsular contracture, and need for additional surgery.  Dr. Sood will discuss these risks further during your consultation.

How long is removing expanders and replacing with implants?

Removing expanders and replacing with permanent implants usually takes about 2 hours.

When do I return for a follow up visit?

You will be seen within a week of surgery.  Dr. Sood will determine if you will need any additional visits.

How long before I can return to work?

Most patients can return to work in about 1-2 weeks depending on work requirements.

How long before I can return to normal activity?

Most activities of daily living can be resumed within a few days.  You will be given a 10 pound lifting restriction for the first few weeks following surgery.  It is important to get up and move around within a day of surgery to help decrease the chance of developing a blood clot.  Strenuous activities should be avoided for about 4- 6 weeks or until Dr. Sood has given you clearance.
